Hobart, Australia: Molle St loses lane to cyclists
A national census of cycling the "Super Tuesday" count to be released this week is expected to show cyclist numbers in Hobart has almost doubled in two years.

The surge is so great Hobart City Council has set up a real-time traffic monitoring system to check numbers on the city's major cycling route.

The Inter City Cycle path from Claremont to the city now attracts up to 1000 riders a day, including a hard core of several hundred who create their own rush hours each day.

The growing number of people resorting to pedal power will be rewarded by a surge in the number of infrastructure projects in the coming months: including installation of secure bike parking in the Argyle St carpark, a revamp of the rivulet track and the prospect of a cycle path through Sandy Bay.
