Entergy says nuclear remains costly
Tue May 25, 2010 12:51am BST

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Entergy Corp (ETR.N) Chief Executive J. Wayne Leonard said on Monday that building new nuclear plants remains too costly and will prevent many utilities from participating in the fledgling nuclear renaissance in the United States.

"Utilities do not want to take that risk," Leonard said at the Reuters Global Energy Summit in Houston. "It's risk we don't control."

New Orleans-based Entergy suspended two license applications filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for proposed new reactors to be built either in Louisiana or Mississippi in 2008 after being unable to negotiate a favorable construction contract.

"Everybody's going to price the risk differently," Leonard said. "When we price the risk appropriately ... the numbers just don't work."

"I've wondered how Southern -- how anybody -- makes the numbers work. Sitting on the outside looking in, they have some reason we don't see," he said.

Exelon's CEO John Rowe said the same thing.
This should be a clear warning.
"the numbers just don't work."

6. Actually, I'd stack overall environmental impact of Chernobyl up against what's...
...happening in the Gulf right now.

This is killing whole swathes of the Gulf ecosystem. Chernobly chased out the people and the ecosystems took over in no time flat.

If there's an upside to it, while large scale nuclear accidents might be bad for people, they do, on the basis of the one example we have, seem to be good for the environment.

3. Last night on Rachel's show Sec. Chu said the one big thing
the neuclear ind. was working on was increasing the useable parts in urnaniun (I think that's what it was). Currently the process onlyuses only 2-3% and they're working in increasing that to 15-20% It would drastically reduce waste & drastically reduce costs too. He sounded vey positive about getting to that point in the forseeable future.

4. Nuclear sounds good on the surface
but when you start studying about the dangers involved it becomes obvious that it is a risk not worth taking. We're going to have a major problem with one of our old nuclear power plants before they're all decommissioned. We've had a couple pretty close calls here recently. No more nukes and phase out the ones we have now is the only sensible thing to do. We can get all our energy from alternate sources and buying into this nuclear canard is only taking time and money away from doing that.
