Question about uranium in Saskatchewan - Anyone have an answer for this lady?
Hello, I am not a Native person, but I teach in a Cree community and
founded an opposition group to uranium mining and exploration on
Eeyou Itschee with my Cree friends. We just had an hearing about an
advanced exploration for uranium, north of Mistissini, the largest
natural lake in Quebec and sacred to the Crees.

I would like to know how many mines have been properly shut down and
decommissionned (tailings securely covered etc) in Saskatchewan. I
thought only Cluff Lake was on the process of being cleaned up.
Cannot find those facts so far on Internet.
Thanks a lot,
Élaine Hébert, member of the Mich Cini Coalition (POISONOUS ROCK in Cree)

1. Did you check Google Scholar?
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=uranium+mining+Saskatchewan&hl=en&btnG=Search&as_sdt=800000000001

I didn't check the articles but that response is to a search for uranium+mining+Saskatchewan.

If you find an article you are interested in but find it is behind a firewall, a good approach is to google the article title and author's name on the regular web. You'll also often find more info (including free copies of their papers) by going to the researcher's webpage.

Canada’s Deadly Secret: Saskatchewan Uranium and the Global Nuclear System
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Canada's Deadly Secret)

Canada’s Deadly Secret: Saskatchewan Uranium and the Global Nuclear System is a 2007 book by Jim Harding which chronicles the struggle over Saskatchewan’s uranium mining, and demonstrates the negative impacts on Aboriginal rights and environmental health, and the effect of free trade. Professor Harding argues that nuclear energy cannot address global warming and that there is no such thing as a “peaceful atom.” Helen Caldicott wrote the foreword to the book.

Jim Harding is a retired professor of environmental and justice studies. He is a founding member of the Regina Group for a Non-Nuclear Society and International Uranium Congress and was director of research for Prairie Justice Research at the University of Regina. Professor Harding also acted as Prairie Correspondent for Nuclear Free Press and consultant to the award-winning film Uranium.

7. Doctors in Quebec have been calling for a moratorium on uranium mining

This might be another group to contact.
Don't know the latest on this, here's something from March:

Anti-uranium doctors renew threat to resign
Last Updated: Monday, March 22, 2010 | 3:31 PM ET
CBC News

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Sept-Îles, Que., in December to protest against uranium exploration in Quebec.

Nearly two-dozen doctors in Sept-Îles, Que., are renewing their threats to resign and leave the province after the government rejected calls for a moratorium on uranium mining and exploration in the region.

The province decided against a moratorium before hearing from a provincial panel researching the health effects of uranium mining, said psychiatrist Dr. Isabelle Gingras, one of the north shore doctors who is threatening to resign.

In December, Dr. Alain Poirier, the chief public health officer in Quebec, announced the creation of a special committee to study the potential effects of uranium exploration and mining on the health of the population.

Gingras is a member of the committee, which was set up after 23 doctors at the Sept-Îles Hospital threatened to resign unless the province banned uranium mining and exploration, which they called a threat to public health.

An article from December mentions "anesthetists, a lung specialist, surgeons, gynecologists",

Quebec unmoved in standoff with doctors

Source: Globe and Mail

The Quebec government is resisting calls for a moratorium on the development of uranium deposits in the province despite threats by doctors in Sept-Îles to quit over plans to open a mine near the town.
...
Physicians in the North Shore community spent the last year fighting mining company Terra Ventures Inc.'s exploration activities. The doctors, municipal officials, community organizations and residents are worried about potential radioactive contamination of the town's water supply.
...
“Fearing for the health of the population, our personal health and that of our families, especially our children, we have decided to leave the region, and for many of us, even the province,” the doctors said in a letter sent Thursday to Quebec Health Minister Yves Bolduc.
...
I looked at the list and you have anesthetists, a lung specialist, surgeons, gynecologists. I'm telling you that the hospital won't be able to function without them. It wouldn't be able to if only five of them left,” said Lorraine Richard, the Parti Québécois Member of the National Assembly for Sept-Îles.

6. Any interest in carcinogens from oil the oil sands drifting all over the earth, stuff that actually
kills people?

No?

Just interested in the google/fantasy squad?

They're all here, as oblivious as ever.

Nuclear power need not be risk free or perfect to be infinitely superior to all the stuff you and your google squad don't care about.

It only needs to be infinitely superior, which it is.

Have a nice oil soaked red herring kind of day.
