Some good news: It's been a great year for Cook's petrels off of the California coast

(as well as other places)

Apparently their population was being hammered by introduced cats and rats on Little Barrier Island (near New Zealand) that were eating the petrel eggs and chicks. Little Barrier Island is one of two known breeding islands for the species, and the other island has a mere 1000 pairs.

Cats were eradicated from the island in 1980, after which the population fell even more steeply due to predation by the unchecked rat population. Rats were successfully eradicated in 2004, and the colony on the island is making a terrific comeback. Breeding success has risen from 5% to 86%!!!

2. DOC NZ has done a great job restoring islands for endangerd bird species
I visited Kapati Island several years ago and saw almost the entire population of several endagered birds -

including Takahes - huge flightless rails that were thought to be extinct for nearly a century.



and I've seen tons of Cooks at sea...
