My problem with costs for non-"green" energy sources
Is that the costs to society and the environment are not included in the cost of the power.

For example, consider a coal plant. It kicks out massive amounts of air pollution, which:

1. lowers property values in its area
2. causes health problems in humans and other living things

The problem is these both cost money, but these costs are not included in the cost of the power.

If the direct economic effects of non-green power were included in their price, wouldn't green energy be much more competitive in terms of cost?

1. With tax breaks, coal-fired electricity is absurdly cheap
there is no incentive for conservation (or alternate sources, as you mentioned).
