Record wave height of 9.5 meters recorded off Queensland coast
10.16pm There's been record wave height - 9.5m - this afternoon off Townsville. "This is the highest that has ever been recorded since measurements began in 1975," Premier Anna Bligh said. Similarly in Cardwell we are planning for a storm surge of over 7m over the high tide mark, Lucinda Beach 4m and at Cairns 2.6m.''

10.50pm Police report a person at Innisfail has called them, asking to evacuate. Emergency workers cannot respond, other than give advice on sheltering, police say. "These are not conditions in which we can send out emergency workers," Premier Anna Bligh said this evening. "These are not conditions where you can put up a helicopter to do a winch rescue. All of that is now beyond the realm of possibility." ...

1. Seven meters = 24 feet. Above high-tide mark. n/t
9.5 m = 30+ feet

Not even imaginable (to this Iowan).

4. "Police report a person at Innisfail has called them, asking to evacuate."
I remember weathering a hurricane and listening to local radio coverage.

One moran called in and bragged she was "local" and "weren't gonna e-vaculate".

At landfall, she called the radio station again and confidently announced she was ready to have someone "pick me up now - its reaaaaall ba'ad".

The DJ told her that no one could or would come to get her.

There was a long silence and she kept bawling "but it's baaad...it's reealll ba'ad..."

Now, when people stupidly refuse to evacuate, local law enforcement hands them a ID tag to tie to their big toe.

It works for most idiots.

When they say get out

get out

yup

5. It's very hard not to feel contempt for people who disregard blatant warnings
and it happens everywhere in the world. And for them then to call expecting others to risk their lives takes the cake. That said I hope she and others who didn't evacuate are safe and learn something.

6. Looks like they're safe:
7.36am Ms Bligh said six people, aged in their 60s, who were trapped in a unit at Port Hinchinbrook overnight were safe and well on Thursday morning.

"I'm very pleased to advise they're safe," she said.

"I'm sure they had tough night."
