Nuclear and coal power getting a big boost
Nuclear and coal power getting a big boost
By: Don Davis, West Central Tribune

ST. PAUL — A Minnesota House committee voted Tuesday to allow new nuclear power plants in the state, with another vote coming soon to remove a ban on new coal power plants and to allow North Dakota coal and electrical power.

Rep. Denny McNamara, R-Hastings, promised to work with Gov. Mark Dayton on both issues. Dayton has expressed reservations on expanding nuclear power.

...McNamara and other Republicans leaders, who hold a legislative majority over Democrats, expect some form of the measure to pass.

Democrats generally oppose lifting the ban...

1. Fucking repukes.
How the hell they took over my state is beyond me.

Here's an idea: we'll put the coal plants and nuclear plants in red areas of the state. They think the risk is okay, they can fucking have it.

2. Just another whacko from a northern state who "wants" global warming
Remember the Montana politician who is sponsoring a bill *praising* global warming for the positive economic boom it will present to that (and other northern states).
Press HELENA, Mont. (AP) A Montana legislator is proposing the state embrace Global Warming as good for the economy.

Republican Rep. Joe Read of Ronan aims to pass a law that says global warming is a natural occurrence that "is beneficial to the welfare and business climate of Montana." Reaction by scientists and environmentalists to House Bill 549 has been harsh. University of Montana climate change professor Steve Running calls it an indefensible attempt to repeal the laws of physics.

In light of the above, am I surprised that environmentally unsound coal plants would be favored by a Minnesota lawmaker? Nope.

In all likelihood the nuclear plant section won't make it into the final legislation; no global warming from those so no economic boost to Minnesota...

4. More details today from Reuters
NEW YORK, March 10 (Reuters) - A few weeks after lifting a moratorium
on building new nuclear power plants in Minnesota, state legislators moved
forward a bill to lift a moratorium on the construction of new coal-fired
power plants.

...the 2007 Next Generation Energy Act, also prohibited the
state's utilities from buying generation from new coal plants outside of
the state to limit carbon dioxide emissions, a greenhouse gas linked to
global warming, among other things.

Supporters of the bills to end the coal and nuclear bans said they
wanted to give power companies more options to meet growing consumer demand
for low cost, reliable electricity, among other things.

...

The biggest investor owned utilities in Minnesota are subsidiaries of
Xcel Energy Inc (XEL.N), which operates two nuclear plants and four coal
plants in the state, and Allete Inc (ALE.N), which has a few coal plants in
the state.
