14. Radiation cloud? Weather Service has been muzzled, I just learned.

A source inside the U.S. National Weather Service tells me they have all been prohibited from talking to media about the potential for a radiation cloud to reach the the U.S., not even to comment on how fast such a cloud could reach here (without commenting on how dangerous it might be) Instead they have been directed to refer all calls on this topic to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the US Dept. of Energy!

2. It really doesn't matter, because those most affected in the US would be CA, OR and WA --
all Blue States.

3. The fact that they don't want to give out information
seems to be rather indicative that it's not good news that they have. That to me just doesn't seem to be responsible.

4. I imagine any responsible agency
Would be loathe to give out limited information that may or may not be accurate. Just saying the winds blowing from Japan could reach point B in X number of days could send a lot of people into a panic. Unless they have specific information on how much radiation will be blown onto the coasts, I don't see a lot of value in fear-mongering.

it's only a matter of time before they come for the internet - in fact it's happening now! time to fill up our new for-profit prison industry with people who like to share music! ugh..

"The White House today proposed sweeping revisions to U.S. copyright law, including making "illegal streaming" of audio or video a federal felony and allowing FBI agents to wiretap suspected infringers."

11. Wind now blowing radiation towards Russia, NOT the U.S. 3/16 6PM
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 05:44 AM by Pecker
While that might be true, you can find a weather report for Fukushima here: http://www.weathercity.com/jp/fukushima/
BTW. I think the Russians will be a bit more vocal, as the weather report indicates that the wind is now NOT blowing towards the U.S., but towards Russia, i.e. WNW 18 km/h, as of Mar 16, 2011 6:00 PM.

Actually, if you go to YouTube, and look at the RussiaToday AKA the RT Channel, it's an English speaking broadcast of news of interest to Russia, and you can find the Russians were concerned about the nuclear mess in Japan, from the start. However, it has not been until March 16th that the winds switched direction and are now blowing towards Russia. --- This should be even more interesting, as Russian land territory is about 150 miles northwsest of the northern tip of Japan, if memory of recent RT news serves me well.

Their overseers are in bed with them too so they can't be trusted either.

14. How difficult is it to monitor
airborne radioactivity? Would you just set geiger counters outside or something? If I remember correctly, geiger counters aren't that expensive, how hard would it be to put together a network of vigilant private citizens to monitor for radioactivity?

16. EPA has taken DRAMATIC cuts over the Bush years
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 08:02 PM by abqmufc
All those cuts left the US air quality monitoring network in shambles. The priority under limited resources is now doing real time monitoring around high population density areas and areas of specific need. Thus rural areas in the West are void of all air monitors, unless a National Park is nearby. Parks must have an air monitor due to Class 1 designations under the Clean Air Act. Class 1 is pristine air, most air-sheds are labeled Class 2, and Class 3 is industrial. Rural areas are left to use modeling techniques based off of weather patterns and surrounding air quality monitoring data. This can be very flawed.

I worked with Tribal Air Quality programs for 10 years. I am pretty familiar with our national air quality network and its woes.

Most radioactive monitors are surrounding our nuclear power plants, national labs, and military installations. I suspect many of those monitors are going off line and moving them to the West Coast. I bet EPA, State's and Tribes are also adjusting their monitors to begin detecting radioactive materials and precursors.

The immediate threat to the US is not that great as of now. The long term impact to the Pacific Ocean is great.

17. So does anyone have a confirmation of this?
The poster in question isn't very credible since they posted a map of ID stations and said that the "east cost wasn't as radioactive as the west cost." (Post has since been deleted.)
