Britain has moved to offer protection to British nationals in Japan in the event of radiation levels increasing in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami.

British Embassy staff are distributing iodine tablets to Britons in Tokyo, Sendai and Niigata as a "contingency measure", the Foreign Office has revealed.

Stable iodine tablets are used to stop the body absorbing radioactive iodine and are effective up to six hours after exposure to radiation.

Meanwhile, more Britons were being evacuated from Japan as fears rose over radiation leaking from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant hit by the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami in north-east Japan on March 11. It has left more than 7,300 dead and nearly 11,000 more people are still missing.
