Radiation 1,600 times normal level 20 km from Fukushima plant: IAEA
Radiation 1,600 times higher than normal levels has been detected in an area about 20 kilometers from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, International Atomic Energy Agency officials said Monday.

Data collected by an IAEA team show that radiation levels of 161 microsievert per hour have been detected in the town of Namie, Fukushima Prefecture, the officials said.

The government has set an exclusion zone covering areas within a 20-km radius of the plant and has urged people within 20 to 30 km to stay indoors.

1. hmmm..
By comparison, the EPA release limit from a nuclear power plant is 250 microsievert.

Per *Year*.

2. More typical readings outside the 20 kilometer radius seem to be
in the range of 2 to 110 microsievert per hour. From http://www.mext.go.jp/english/radio activity_level/detail/1303986.htm (you have to patch that link; I broke it to avoid crashing the site); look at fukushima district pdf.

I think a chest X-ray delivers around 30 to 50 microsievert, so 161 is like three chest x-rays per hour, 2 is like a chest x-ray each day. I think. Maybe some of our great experts on radiation could comment.

Can anyone tell me how to copy a page of a pdf into a post (on a Mac)? There is a very good map at the MEXT site.
