3. radiation is everywhere, and natural
it's just that large doses of it tend to be local and unnatural.

6. Would you be willing to snort 4 sand-grain sized pieces of plutonium fallout?
How about ingesting 10 clay-grain sized pieces so they could more easily become lodged in the diverticuli of your intestine?

They emit almost no radiation at all.

7. Plutonium...
Edward Teller ("The Father of the Hydrogen Bomb") once offered to a reporter the challenge that
he (Teller) would eat any amount of plutonium that the reporter would eat of caffeine.

"Radiation, the Unseen Killer! It stalks you at night in your dreams!"

Shut the nukes. Now.

...can be accurately understood by looking at a geiger counter and "millisevert" chart is an insidious myth.

The damage is at the molecular level.

You still haven't answered the question, would you snort them?

PS Congratulations on the epiphany. Now if you could understand the way the superstructure is inferior to the infrastrucure we'd be making progress on enhancing your understanding of the role of spiritual awakenings.

20. You are claiming people are panicked because they face the chance of doing what you will not.

I'd say the point is crystal clear.

22. I'm saying there's no need to panic.
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 10:31 AM by GliderGuider
I agree that fear is a natural human reaction in the face of unfamiliar dangers. People get panicky about hantavirus too. My point is that it's perfectly possible to protect yourself against risks without panicking.

The scenario you presented was of course improperly posed. You offered me the possibility of knowingly ingesting plutonium, and comparing my disinclination to do that with the fear of someone who doesn't have a choice. I know that ingesting plutonium is hazardous, but at the same time I'm not afraid of it. I would hope that if I were in the situation where I didn't know what was in the air I would take whatever precautions were available, then use whatever techniques I know to keep the fear at bay.

I've done that in other life-threatening situations (including a pretty nasty one when I was soaring) and it helps for being able to continue functioning. It's perfectly possible to move beyond fear and stay rationally risk-averse.

23. ...when did you stop studying science?
...can be accurately understood by looking at a geiger counter and "millisevert" chart is an insidious myth.

The damage is at the molecular level.
-----------------------------------------------

Evidently you don't know that examination of the damage at the
molecular level, specifically in DNA and RNA is how the dose
charts are calibrated.

Here's a good article on the damage from low dose radiation from
scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory:

https://www.llnl.gov/str/JulAug03/Wyrobek.html

It evens details measurements of the radiation damage repair
mechanism that acts analogous to the immune system:

Low-Dose Exposure Can Protect

The team also discovered that the human lymphoblastoid cells exhibit what is called an adaptive response to ionizing radiation. An extremely low dose (also called a priming dose) appears to offer protection to the cell from a subsequent high dose (2 grays) of ionizing radiation. The degree of protection was measured by the amount of reduced chromosomal damage. A priming dose of 0.05 gray, administered about 6 hours before the high dose, can reduce chromosomal damage by 20 to 50 percent, compared with damage to cells that were not exposed to the priming dose.

In what grade did you stop studying science?

PamW

11. I don't know how accurate this is in "absolute" terms, but it is useful for perspective...

Note how much comparable radiation is acquired from a "routine" mammogram, which in this litigious world often gets repeated and repeated again in the attempt to get better differentiation of "normal." Not saying that they are not needed, but for those so very worried about radiation, it may mean looking at changing screening recommendations with a more critical eye--and asking those questions of your provider.

16. I noticed that, too
There's NO WAY I'm having another mammogram, unless and until my doctor or I find a lump in my breast during a BSE. I've read sources that claim mammograms can actually cause breast cancer, because breast tissue is more vulnerable to radiation. And I've noticed that many female doctors I've known--who heartily tout annual mammograms--have gotten breast cancer.

Coincidence or not, there's no way I'm taking that kind of chance with my health.
