2. The more I muse on it
the more I think that whoever suggested that crushed styrofoam floating on a swimming pool was an appropriate model was dead on.

Are they the result of past ice-breaker channels being kept open

4. The arc thingies are just artifacts.
But the huge patches of depleted ice are real -- or at least it would appear so from watching the 30-day loop at the cryosphere today site.

There is almost NO 100% ice up there. It's brutal.

The more I look at what's going on, the more I think 2015 or 2016 might be good guesses.
