Toys"R"Us completes largest rooftop PV plant in United States

On August 11th, 2011, toy maker Toys"R"Us Inc. (Wayne, New Jersey, U.S.) celebrated the completion of a 5.38 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, the largest rooftop PV plant in the United States, at its Flanders, New Jersey distribution center.

The PV plant is comprised of 37,000 Uni-Solar amorphous silicon flexible thin-film PV modules, and will meet an estimated 72% of the electricity needs of the facility.

“At Toys“R”Us, we continually look for ways to diversify our energy portfolio and incorporate sustainable initiatives throughout our operations,” said Toys"R"Us Chairman and CEO Jerry Storch.

“This solar rooftop project would not have been possible without New Jersey’s ongoing support and shared commitment to clean energy opportunities for businesses.”

1. Rooftops, decentralized, is the way to go!

2. Decentralized, rooftop solar is great!
However, there will continue to be a need for centralized generation as well… (not all rooftops are suitable for solar installations, and not all rooftops are sufficiently large to power the buildings beneath them.)

3. The panels can sit on the ground as well,
if there is enough sunny space.

5. My house is surrounded by trees.
Please don’t ask me to cut them down.

Look at the Toys"R"Us building in this story (not enough roof to provide 100% of its need.)

7. Maybe a community solar garden is for you.

I am going to cut down some lovely fruitless mulberries so I can get optimum solar passive heat in the winter. I will be planting real fruit trees a bit farther from the house, but the "mulberries'" shade will be missed.

Edited to add that ToyRus could probably make up the difference with some serious conservation.

8. Do the trees shade the house in the summer?
I have a massive tree in the front that totally shades the roof, but it also keeps the sun out in the summer.

It's so effective that down in Sacramento, the MUD gives away free shade trees.

10. They actually shade the yard beside the house.
The house eaves will be extended to allow no summer sun in, but plenty of winter sun.

9. But they suport hateful groups like "Autism Speaks" so I'm still boycotting them.
