One electric vehicle charger per mile: a Florida company is making it possible
What's next for WattNext? Solar car-charging stations with shade
By Walter Pacheco, Orlando Sentinel
7:39 p.m. EDT, October 30, 2011

WattNext, under the name Sunlight Power Systems, in 2009 installed the RubeStation at Eustis Street and Clifford Avenue in downtown Eustis. It's an electric-car-charging station prototype that resembles a red and yellow shelter with benches. The cost: $30,000. He is working on developing a cheaper version.

Electric car owners can drive into one of three charging bays located beside the RubeStation, plug in and recharge their car batteries for free. For example, the Nissan Leaf with its 24 kilowatt-hour battery pack takes about eight hours to recharge. A fully charged electric car battery can last as much as 100 miles.

There are at least 64 charging stations in Central Florida from DeLand to St. Cloud — most of them along the I-4 corridor. (Per google maps that is a 67.4 mile drive)

1. For FREE?
This is obviously not going to last. How does he expect to make any money?

OK, I read the article. He's using solar power. Smart. And there will be a nominal fee for charging the car...

Still, good for him. He will have a good name, once all-electric cars get really numerous.

I'd like to see something like to see something like this out here in CA.

2. We're putting in five in the next few months. For free.
To go along with a big solar shaded solar roof project.

It's really only pennies per hour, not much in the big picture.

We have to promote EVs, so we think it's worth it!
