more turmoil today in iran as iranian protesters stormed the british embassy, smashing windows, taking hostages, protests were the result of sanctions imposed by britain, which many believe is aimed at achieving the capability of making an atomic bomb. here is president obama today on the news. please take a listen. rioters essentially overrunning the embassy and setting on fire is an indication that the iranian government is not taking its international obligation seriously and so obviously, we're deeply concerned about the additisitua and expect to see action very quickly. now let's get the latest from tehran. here is ali arusie with the full repor report. reporter: it seems reminiscent of the raid in 1979. it was raided by students. two compounds raided. one in the north of tehran, one in the north of tehran. several hundred members have gathered outside the embassy. many breached the walls to the embassy. set fire to documentation, took documentation, an embassy vehicle set on fire. pictures of the queen torn down from the building. occupied the building for several hours. from 2:30 in the afternoon local time until about 11:00 p.m. in the evening. the chief of police in tehran had to go out to the embassy and convince members to leave. it was surrounded by police. the iranian foreign ministry condemned attacks. it shows that things like this can't be fully controlled in house. nbc news, tehran. many thanks. let's get reaction from our distinguished guest thonz whole difficult story. we have retired u.s. army general, former nato supreme allied commander wes clark. mark ginsburg, u.s. ambassador to more akio, and ken timerman, news max contributing editor and president and ceo of the foundation for democracy in iran. mark, to get the facts right, these protester who's broke into the british embassy are part of the iranian military axis, they were put up to it. no doubt based on report that the so-called siege, the civilian goon squad of the revolutionary guard were put up to attack the embassy in both installations. these are the very types of individuals that have been set against the iranian opposition, the shock troops that the mullaftmu mullahs use against opposition to create the appearance that civilians supporting the regime are doing their bidding. ken timerman, i heard president obama on that clip. it was narrative, not policy. obama has not -- we, the united states has done anything definitive about the attempt to assassinate the saudi arabian ambassador on american soil using mexican drug lords and when the green revolution were marching in the streets for democracy, the united states and president obama never lifted a finger. what is president obama going to do now with our blood brothers that the brits from the united kingdom attacked? what will we do about it? i expect president obama will do nothing, larry. and i think you are absolutely right. he didn't lift a finger when you have people demonstrating in the streets in tehran in june 2009, and now you have the goon squad going into the british embassy. the really significant thing here are a couple of explosions that have taken place recently at revolutionary guard bases and a second attack not reported here, the son of the former commander of the revolutionary guard. he was a u.s. citizen. murdered i believe in dubai the same day as that attack on a missile base outside of tehran two weeks ago. and general wes clark, i want to stay with this. i'm sure the brits can take care of themselves. they are putting on tough sanctions and boycotts, maybe they'll go after the iranian central bank, maybe they won't. but i'm concerned about what american policy is. still haven't gotten anything definitive for the military attempt to assassinate the saudi ambassador on american soil. and are other blood brother ally israel is trying to make mischief in iran, which is laudable. why aren't we backing them? first of all, the white house has a very linear policy on iran from the beginning. there was an opportunity for negotiations, there were sanctions, there's -- we've gone to allies and there are tougher sanctions and all options on the table with respect to the nuclear issue. so i think that there is probably a lot going on that we don't see. know the nature of covert action is that you don't announce it. we know things are going on inside iran. i suspect -- i suspect because i'm not clear, and if i were, i couldn't talk about it. i suspect we are working with our friends overseas to create some mischief in there. how do you think this is going to end? this is going to end by tougher and tougher sanctions, you will see more and more resistance inside iran to the iranian government. and i think that what you are seeing from the iran and the military dictatorship gains american interests and the interests of freedom everywhere? it's quite clear to all of us who follow incidents in iran, no matter how many sanctions imposed, and which countries impose them, indeed, the brits went further than the united states by putting sanctions on the central bank which we have yet refused to do, so the ire was directed at the brits and perhaps the french will be next. the answer is very simple. no matter how many sanctions we impose, no matter how far we ratchet up the sanctions, no matter how linear the policy may be, the iranians are continuing their nuclear bomb making potential. the international atomic energy agency report that was just issued is the clearest evidence that no matter how much we may be giving ourselves pats on the back, for really imposing significant sanctions, it does not stop iranians from getting closer to the day of reckoning when they have a nuclear weapon. is the united states government supporting israel? all sorts of talk about explosions happening around iran. speculation that is inside iran. speculation that israel is the responsible party. do you reckon as wes clark says, covert operation that we're helping israel or, for example, a couple weeks ago, obama made fun of israel and netanyahu. what are we doing to help our brothers in israel? i don't think we're doing anything, larry. the israelis, if they are involved with this, are doing it very quietly, and all of these talk that you've heard coming out of tel aviv about a possible military strike on iran has been just that, talk. i think it's a smoke screen. when israelis actually take military action as they did against iraq in 1981 or the syrian nuclear plant in september 2007, they say nothing ahead of time. if i were sitting in tel aviv, i wouldn't think of launching military strikes with my air force today, i would think of doing the kind of things that happened recently, causing accidents in missile plants. apparently, larry, there was at this latest, there was supposed to be a visit by ayatollah khomeni. it may have been an assassination attempt. on the very evening that took place, the son of the former commander of the revolutionary guard was killed in dubai, probably by people from another faction within the government. wes clark, the last word. this is a military dictatorship, the mullahs are front men. this is a military dictatorship. shouldn't we reckon with them and deal with them as such?
