China may finance floating Russian nuclear power stations.

"Russia plans to start building floating nuclear power stations next year, possibly with the participation of China if domestic financing for the project is insufficient, a senior atomic energy official said.

�We signed a contract with China on terms� for a potential loan to help finance the project if needed, Alexander Polushkin, head of development at Russia�s Rosenergoatom nuclear agency, was quoted by ITAR-TASS news agency as saying..."

2. From what I gather, yes.

The idea is intriguing from other angles however.

Off the top of my head, with no real analysis or deeper thought, I imagine that mobile power stations of this type could be used to cover seasonal peaks in energy demand, following air conditioning requirements, for instance, or in times of drought for desalination emergencies, or to power relief efforts where on shore facilities have been damaged. They may also assist in powering offshore construction projects, such as wind fields and the like.

The Russians must have a need. They appear pretty well committed to building them.
