Tony Blair says that the UK will need nuclear power.
Tony Blair says "controversial and difficult" decisions will have to be taken over the need for nuclear power to tackle the UK energy crisis.
The prime minister told the Liaison Committee, made up of the 31 MPs who chair Commons committees, any decision will be taken in the national interest.

He is said to believe nuclear power can improve the security of the UK's energy supply and also help on climate change.

A government review of energy options is expected to be announced next week...

Mr Blair replied: "With some of the issues to do with climate change, and you can see it with the debate about nuclear power, there are going to be difficult and controversial decisions government has got to take.

About energy security and supply that will mean issues that are bound to be extremely controversial

"And in the end it has got to do what it believes to be right in the long-term interests of the country."

He conceded that there were strongly held positions on issues such as nuclear power.

"About energy security and supply that will mean issues that are bound to be extremely controversial," he said.

But he insisted that the reason why people were coming round to the nuclear option was "because the facts have changed".

1. I suppose
now that we know the reality of climate change and the pressure for action can no longer be ignored, it is the time to reward your party paymasters, and encourage new ones, by flashing out the multi-billion contracts for useless, dangerous nuclear power.

What we need is distributed, local power generation and a massive public campaign to cut inefficiencies and waste.

Chillingly on tv last night some minister said 'governments don't make these sort of decisions any more. That's the job of the private sector'

With luck then, an opportunity to make a profit will come along and our children's futures will be guaranteed...:sarcasm:

6. Anyone who gives a shit about global warming supports nuclear power.
Without there will be no children's future.

The "renewable energy as solution to global warming" game is simply irrational faith under the circumstances.

I don't like Tony Blair. He is a huge disappointment as a leader and a man. But in this case he is right.

2. Either that or Rolling blackouts
If the UK is going to meet it's current targets for GHG reduction. Not to mention what might be hoped for in future revisions. They need to shut down their Coal fired plants.

I can't think of another suitable alternative to provide 2000MW, 24/7. That can be brought on line in a reasonable time.

3. Doesn't seem to be unpopular
Going by the comments & rec's on the BBC's comments page, most people seem to be in favour of a nuclear UK in the absence of an alternative:

I did like this comment, though:
So Blair is 'open-minded' concerning nuclear power. What exactly does that mean? If he still can't make up his mind after dozens of studies doesn't that just make him indecisive? Dear God, he took the country to war on less evidence than is available in support of nuclear power. Maybe he should ask Bush for his opinion.
