Need some Help with a Repug
Edited on Fri Jan-16-04 06:40 PM by Beearewhyain
An associate of mine with whom I have the occasional discussion told me today that it is his "belief" that the science supporting pollution causing global warming was not very strong. He also mentioned something about the sun being hotter now than it has been in the recent past. This not being my area of expertise I was hoping that someone might be able to provide me with some evidence. Please note: this is a very intelligent guy so editorials aren't going to cut it, I need some hard data. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

On edit: spill chuck

2. The climate of the world is getting warmer
If he is so intelligent, what is that crap about the sun being hotter now?
Global warming wrecks havoc with weather patterns in different areas of the world.

3. Ask him the question
Is the environment better now than it was 100 years ago. If he answers that it's the same or better, he's an idiot.

4. I didn't say he wasn't gullible
He is very smart about some things...I just don't think he is using his noggin on this one. But he is the type to "figure out the answer" and then that's the end of it. Not real flexible in his thinking.

6. I See The Same Question Day In And Day Out At DU
If you can't argue with a Freeper on "his" terms and beliefs, then let it go.

Any information provided here is factual, quoted and linked other than the Lounge and even then, we provide data when Freepes can't.

Screw him and anyone who's Radio is permanately tuned to Rush.

7. Well. there's the rub
He is a nice guy otherwise and a decent friend but his politics just need to be given a reality check.

8. There was a thread on this last night
The sun is no hotter than it's been.

Data can be found by simply using Google with the keywords "climate change climatology".

Search on "Wallace Broecker" and you'll find a huge amount of info from THE expert on climate change. BTW, one of Broecker's grandchildren is a DUer.

Global Warming is an established fact. Now that the right wing has gotten that through their collective pointy head, they're beginning to say Human-Caused Global Warming, since several of the key indices are caused by natural forces; e.g., this being the end period of an "inter-stadial" or non-ice-age era.

It's understandable that more intelligent people could be annoyed by the simplistic "Save-The-Planet" rhetoric, but the fact is that major changes are starting, and that human activity has been one of the measurable triggers.

Strong cases have been made that human industry has accellerated most of the naturally-occuring processes. This was shown very clearly in September and October of 2001, when the commercial aircraft grounding had unambiguous and measurable effects on the weather.

Beyond a literature search and some informed reading, you can't do much about someone who wants to exonerate business of all its sins.

Good luck.

9. Head over to Smirking Chimp, check out some Greenhouse threads
to which Bajanman has posted. The guy is a solar physicist who covers these topics pretty well.
