Ballard announces availability of new fuel cell
Vancouver, Canada: Ballard Systems (NASDAQ: BS) today announced
pricing and availability of their new fuel cell, the APR-01.
Ballard’s Chief Executive Officer, said
“the APR-01 has an electrical output of 90 KW at an efficiency
of 55 percent and is suitable for cars of up to 100 horsepower”.

volume, approx. 2 cu.ft.
weight, approx. 270 lbs.
Pricing is USD 6700, in OEM quantities.
Availability is twenty weeks.

1. $6700 buys a LOT of batteries.
Of course that's the price of the fuel cell alone and doesn't touch the cost of tankage, lines, control systems or the actual motor itself.

I think battery-only or plug-in diesel hybrids might be a bit cheaper. Also every new diesel could be made duel fuel for a pittance.

2. Of course we only live in today. There is no tomorrow, no such thing as
improvements to a new technology, no future progress is going to be achieved. The first desk-top computer cost about $3,000 dollars..Now you can buy one for $500 that is thousands of times more powerful - oh and it's portable. Something like 60% of American homes have PCs in them. And oh yeah, the internet, one of the transforming technologies of our time, wouldn't have been possible without cheaper processers, enabling millions of PCs to be sold and high speed servers at economical prices.

No, progress is just imaginary, doesn't happen.
