Question for my Green friends.
Ok, so I'm interning now with my local Habitat for Humanity for this term at school. Last night we had a meeting with Habitat and discussed who they are, what they do etc etc. I'm surprised at how little I knew about them, but that's another story.

The coordinator said that she wanted us to market to several target groups in our community, one of them was labeled as "environmental groups". She didn't really have any ideas about who or what direction she was thinking, so it's pretty much up to me. Now I admit, I'm not actively involved in any environmental groups, so my knowledge of organizations in that area is nil. So what I'm hoping, is that my true Green friends can provide some organization names and contact info.

What we are trying to do is to market to target groups to get them involved with Habitat's Re-Store program, that's where they get donations of home items, like lighting, doors, windows and such and then re-sell them to get money to build more homes. What my Habitat wants to do is build partnerships with these target groups to get two things accomplished 1) Supply the store with more items and 2)Get more customers to the store. I'm thinking that the environmental groups can help by getting the word out to recycle building materials locally and keep these items out of the landfills and also help themselves by getting building materials for themselves, friends, and family at discounted prices.

Anyways, I've had less than twelve hours to process this, so I'm sorry if this sketchy. My main question is what groups should I try to reach out to and how can I reach them. Also, any thoughts about whether this project is consistent with environmentalist ideals?

1. Groups that would do this would be local...

...and not to probe, but don't even have any idea what state you're in.

(As an aside, I have a bunch of ceramic tile I salvaged from a neighbors trash -- new tile, not used -- and want to donate it to HHFH, but my local chapter doesn't give any information about where materials donations would be collected, just a web money collector.)

2. Sure, my focus would have to be on the local area, but I was thinking that
if there was a bigger national org, that I could find out more about them and then figure out if they have something local. I'm in LakeCounty, Illinois. I'm just clueless about what orgs do environmental action like that.

From what I understood, you can go to the local re-store, if your area has one, otherwise you call the local Habitat and tell them what you have, then a volunteer comes by to pick up the donation if they decide they want it.

Here's the website for my local Habitat. www.habitatlc.org

6. Yeah I'm on Freecycle too, but my local one at least frowns on anything
solicitating. It's either you have something or want something, no in betweens.

7. Another idea: local swap-meets. Filled with recyclers!
For that matter, places like GoodWill, although they might fall into the category of "competition."

8. I can't think of a local swap meet. I love those things!
This Re-store is located right next to the Salvation Army and another Goodwill store, so that's out. Great ideas though and I appreciate the help.
