Vermont considers a new power plant and other bright ideas

Howard Dean knew how to start a conversation.

When the former governor decided it was time for the state to talk about energy, he suggested a coal-fired power plant in northwestern Vermont.

“This is not a proposal, but this is intended to spur discussion,” Dean said in March 2001. “The whole point is to get Vermonters to think about having a power plant in their back yard. We are going to have to have one.”

Although his coal-fired suggestion “sent shudders through the environmental and energy conservation communities,” according to media reports, the conversation did not lead to a new power plant or any other long-term solution.

2. This Vermonter's View
This Vermonter would rather have some serious attempts to utilize wind resources or even another nuclear plant than a coal-fired plant.

3. What happened to all the electricity coming in from Quebec?
That's hydro, therefore clean. I've seen the lines of towers marching south from Sherbrooke and Magog; where's that juice going?

Mind if I ask where in Vermont you live? I grew up in Lunenburg, and still go there three or four times a year..
