STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Sweden's premier met with Ford Motor Co. CEO Bill Ford on Friday to discuss a planned center for developing new fuel-efficient hybrid systems in the city of Goteborg.
Ford and its subsidiary Volvo, with its main operation in Sweden, announced plans for the center in June, with Volvo officials saying the car maker would invest 10 billion kronor ($1.36 billion) in developing new environmental technology for its fleet over the coming years.
The government, which has an ambitious plan to break Sweden's oil dependancy by 2020, has said it will chip in up to 100 million kronor ($14 million) in the project.
Ford was in Goteborg to participate in a business forum, and Prime Minister Goran Persson, who traveled to the southwestern city solely to meet with Ford, said he was impressed by the CEO's vision for environmentally friendly cars.
