Anybody else making their own biodiesel?
It's a good way to make a difference--and personally stick XOM in the eye. I've really enjoyed it so far, and my truck likes it as well.

Nothing like telling the nerd in the Prius that your vehicle, at 9900lbs GVW, is more carbon neutral than his. :D

1. I know lots of people who make their own methane
However, they don't capture it and it is quite unpleasant to sit in the same room with them.

5. It'll power just about any diesel vehicle
A good place to start up: www.biodieselcommunity.org

I make mine in the backyard; my setup isn't ideal, but its getting the job done. I haven't been to a gas station in weeks. :)

10. Maryland is a hotbed of those subsersive biodiesel users.

3. No, but I bought my uncle a book detailing how to do it.
Neither of our vehicles run on diesel.

6. Part of the problem in the US
Cheap gas has made us resist the fuel efficient diesels so popular in Europe. Our fleet is about 3% diesel...theirs is 40%.

We don't need cheaper gasoline, we need to change what we drive.

11. But diesels can run biodiesel.
Big oil would never stand for that.

4. My neighbor makes it.
He runs his big-assed Chevy truck on it & heats his house with it as well. He's also a RW fundie type, but a really sincere and decent guy. We just agree to disagree on politics & religion, & he's always been really helpful about doing things like welding the front-end loader on my old International tractor when it needed it.

7. Biodiesel, Ethanol, Hydrogen
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 11:09 PM by Arctic W Fox
I'm looking into starting a H2/biodiesel/ethanol (sugar cane) business down in Mexico if I can ever get funding. :(

I'm presently testing out ethanol in my little 93 Duster.

9. I have made it...
but I prefer to buy it. I attended a girl Mark seminar and have a little advantage with my degree in chemistry, but it's very simple to make. All you need is a source for the veggie oil, chemicals, workspace, and time. All you need to buy it is money, so I take the easy way out. I have an old diesel Mercedes, but I may look for a VW TDI wagon soon.

BTW, your fuel has almost no VOC emmissions when you fill up, unlike gasoline. To me the bottom line is that nobody is dying in Iraq so that I can drive my Merc.

12. A woman near my dad's farm makes it
She gets used frying oil from local restaurants for free and converts it to biodiesel. She's currently making 50 gallons per day at a cost of 70 cents/gallon. She's selling it to my dad and a few other local farmers for $1.70/gallon, which is still a great deal considering my dad burns well over 1000 gallons of diesel per year in the tractors and regular diesel costs $3/gallon right now.
