"Cotton Industry Concerned Over Weed", herbicide resistant amaranth
Cotton Industry Concerned Over Weed

Palmer amaranth, a type of pig weed, grows 6 to 10 feet tall. If someone were trying to design a particularly nasty weed, Palmer amaranth could be the model, said Alan York, weed scientist at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Amaranth that resists the most common herbicide used in cotton, glyphostate, has been confirmed in 10 of North Carolina's 100 counties, four of Georgia's 159 counties and is suspected in Tennessee, South Carolina and Arkansas.

In Georgia, where amaranth has been confirmed in 48 fields, the weed took over some fields and the cotton had to be cut down, rather than harvested, said University of Georgia weed scientist Stanley Culpepper.

"If we lost conservation tillage in the Southeast the financial and environmental consequences would be nothing short of catastrophic," said Eddie Green, who grew 1,750 acres of cotton on a family farm near Unadilla.

8. Perhaps they aught to grow another weed instead;
Hemp is stronger and more environmentally friendly than cotton.

9. Six to 10 feet tall?
This calls for a biofuel advocate to promote it as a new source of energy.

11. It's edible to humans, pigs and cows.
and nothing has as many seeds as amaranth. It will take years to clear a field of this stuff.

12. Wow. Where's JohnWxy when you need him?
I am surprised that he has written lots of posts telling us about how we can make ethanol from amaranth and save the world for muscle cars. If I recall correctly, one of his schticks is hating cotton too, so it all fits together.

He was here a while ago, talking up coal. I'm sure I'd rather have chat up amaranth, since coal is the most toxic of his lectures.

Johnny? Johnnyboy? Where arrrrreeeeeee youuuuuuuuuu, Johnnyboy?

13. Never been to barn yard
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 11:02 AM by hankthecrank
This plant likes ground that has a lot manure on it. Kind of like this board!

That why it grows good on old yard used for cattle.

any other stupid ideal!!!

people who live in rural places need other people who never been there before to tell what grows there. yea thats right

14. You mean that cotton growers can prevent Amaranth weeds by keeping
cows out of the cotton fields? Or do you mean that Amaranth can be fermented to solve all of our energy woes?

I guess that round-up resistance isn't all that serious after all, so long as one appreciates the importance of cows.

Since you have been in a barnyard, and know all there is to know about them, maybe you should write them with your solution to this round-up matter.
