All this cold weather out west proves their is no such thing as global warming? That is what my sis
sister says.

Of course, I know she is wrong, but I need a two sentence reply to give her. There is no way she will read any kind of article about the environment, and if I can't say what I have to say in one or two sentences, I'll not be able to make her listen.

Any suggestions?

1. Global warming messes up weather patterns
Look for more strange weather to come.

Maybe that will help?

2. And when the temperature rises will she concede that it does in fact
exist? Just tell her that a few days or weeks of weather of any kind proves nothing either way.

3. The weather out west is typical. Lots of snow but typical. The weather across
much of the eastern US and in some other parts of the world is unusually warm for this time for year. Has been all winter. Plant and wildlife cycles have advanced considerably.

But, if she won't educate herself and won't believe her own eyes, what can you hope to do in two sentences?

10. On the whole, temperatures out west are normal to slightly above normal.
Temperatures in the east are way above normal. But when we talk about global warming, we're talking long term averages. The last 25 year period was the warmest 25 year period in the last 1000 years and beyond that we have no reliable records. Show her a graph.

17. It's not typical in California
It's January; it should be raining and in the 40's-50's, not dry and in the 30's statewide. :scared:

4. Climate change occurs unevenly
The point is that overall the earth is warmer (I don't have the sites available but you can google them) and glaciers are melting, causing islands to sink into the water (google for examples). The winter out west is just an example of how screwed up water currents and other things affecting weather have become.

5. Actually, from the climate models
Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 04:38 PM by Blue_In_AK
global warming will ultimately lead to a very severe cold snap especially felt in the northeast and Europe. As more fresh water is released into the ocean from the melting ice caps, the ocean currents will slow down to the point where warm air will not rise to the surface as it does now warming the ambient air.

Perhaps your sister would be more comfortable with the term "climate change," because it's coming, you can count on it.

6. Just don't bite on her statements. she is playing with you.
Those folks are sick, imho. They want to fight and argue with anyone who will engage. From past experience, i've found the best thing to do is ignore and slack off on corresponding with them. It works.

Second sentence: Get your head out of the sand, dear sister.

8. don't let that tree in the forest hit her in the head
as she runs around with her eyes closed and her brain turned off. i just look at people like the idiots they are when they say that. the temps are going up, and this is being caused by CO2 input to the atmosphere by us. there are approx. 1000 or so peer-reviewed science articles that prove this and NONE, 0.00000000, that disprove it.

9. The West has been snowy but not abnormally cold
Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 04:42 PM by jpak
If you look at the data, the West throughout December and most of January have been above normal...

Scroll way down to the end of the table for Dec 2006 and Jan 2007.

14. Global warming >>>>> climate destabilization, worse extremes
of weather (hotter hots, colder colds, dryer longer droughts, harder rains with worse floods). IOW, weather records falling like dominos. Weather models are not holding true anymore, so forecasts beyond a week seem to be much less reliable.

15. People need to dump the phrase,
"Global Warming". The truth of the matter is "Global Climate Change". That's for starters.

16. WTF!?! It's an "El Nino" year.....
So right now the jet stream should be locked into a pattern where it swings down south of Hawaii and up across California and Oregon bringing storm after storm. Warm rain and lots of it is the pattern for California in an "El Nino" ocean cycle.

Instead we are getting the jet stream looping over Alaska and bypassing us entirely. No rain, no snow. Cold enough to put ice over the swimming pools in Santa Rosa which is unheard of.

Anyway it's CLIMATE CHANGE if she bothered to check out the science.
