Some think of him (wrongly) as the direct spawn of Satan, Big Oil incarnate, and Dick Cheney; however, he's given some thought to the problem of biofuel that can't be dismissed by armchair-based debunkery. The
Coming Global Oil Crisis website has a well-buried page linking
five of his papers.
The Biofuel Myths and Truths <2006 September 28>
- "The astronomic scale of energy consumption from fossil plants and the minute scale of energy production from new plants are fundamentally incompatible
- In engineered crop systems, we continuously apply fossil fuels and nutrients to replenish soil
- What Earth has produced over 400 million years cannot be produced in annual cycles
- If we ever attempt to do so, we will destroy the planet and ourselves
- The initial stage of planetary destruction is well under way
- We must pull back and use fewer resources"
That doesn't exactly sound like the propaganda of an oil company disinformation agent to me.
For the more serious scientifically-literate reader, these papers provide deep background on the downside of biofuels. Patzek, as you will see, does not oppose their use; just using them to maintain an unmaintainable system of energy use.
I am coming to the conclusion that biofuels could be the energy source of choice for agriculture in the future. However, I shudder to think of the ecological damage that could result from a full-bore attempt to replace petroleum with agriculture-based fuels. Responsible proponants of biofuels don't propose such a project. But there's Big Money involved, and responsibility is usually secondary in any money-grab.
