The Conservative government will spend $36 million to help consumers choose more environmentally friendly automobiles.
Federal Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon made the announcement Wednesday at the Toronto International Auto Show.
He said Ottawa will spend $21 million for a new program to provide information on automobile fuel consumption as a way of encouraging consumers to invest in “green” vehicles.
“That will enable consumers to go and verify, either on a website or through different media, what is the vehicle that is the most appropriate in terms of the consumer’s budget (and) in terms of gas mileage,” the minister said.
The government will provide another $15 million toward buying, testing and showcasing fuel-efficient technologies, which Cannon said will allow Transport Canada to test and certify new, environmentally friendly cars in less time.
