this shows how global warming/climate change is not an environmental problem, but rather an energy problem. I found it to be a very interesting read.

And even worse. Once oil has definitely peaked and becomes more scarce and expensive, instead of asking people to make positive lifestyle changes they'll turn to dirty and even more destructive means to maintain the "American lifestyle" for as long as possible.

I just can't find any optimism these days.

Welcome to DU. :hi:

Klare makes some very sharp points. There is a subtext to this article though, like there is to so many others written by clear thinkers on the fossil fuel/global warming conundrum. That subtext is in an unspoken three-word clause whose existence is acknowledged only subliminally.

You can sense it in this excerpt:

If, however, we seek to protect the climate while there is still time to do so, we must embrace a fundamental transformation in our energy behavior: nothing else will make a significant difference. In practice, this devolves into two fundamental postulates. We must substantially reduce our consumption of fossil fuels, and we must find ways to capture and bury the carbon by-products of the fossil fuels we do consume.

The missing clause? "We must...but we won't."

Oh, and welcome to DU!
