Australia to change lightbulbs to curb warming (ban incandescent) - Reuters
Australia to change lightbulbs to curb warming
Tue Feb 20, 2007 2:35 AM GMT

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia will be the world's first country to ban incandescent
lightbulbs in a bid to curb Greenhouse gas emissions, with the government saying on
Tuesday they would be phased out within three years. Environment Minister Malcolm
Turnbull said yellow incandescent bulbs, which have been in use virtually unchanged
for 125 years, would be replaced by more efficient compact fluorescent bulbs by 2009.

"By that stage you simply won't be able to buy incandescent lightbulbs, because they
won't meet the energy standard," Turnbull told local radio.

Australia along with the U.S. has refused to sign up to the Kyoto Protocol setting
Greenhouse Gas reduction targets, calling instead for an agreement requiring energy-
hungry developing countries like India and China to help combat climate change.

Turnbull said the banning of incandescent bulbs would help trim 800,000 tonnes from
Australia's current emissions level by 2012 and lower household lighting costs by 66
per cent.

6. Turnbuill has been spouting off for weeks
about how we don't have to sign Kyoto, he and Little Johnnie are leading the world in reducing greenhouse gases. This is just something for voters to point to and say, yeah, of course we are. Look at my light bulbs!

3. Fluorescent bulbs are horrible
Mysteriously, the world has buried all those reports from the 1970's linking them to various kinds of cancers. Not to mention the fact that their flickering (which may not be visible to healthy people) can trigger seizures in susceptible people, and increases eyestrain.

Here's a better idea: CARS THAT RUN ON ALTERNATIVE FUELS. Cars are the #1 source of pollution, so go after the #1 source of pollution, instead of doing stupid crap to *appear* to be green, while endangering people's health.

5. Never a free lunch, though...
While fluorescent lights are seen as a crucial part of the fight against greenhouse gas emissions because they use about a quarter of the energy, they contain trace elements of mercury.

This is not enough to pose a danger to users but it could become a concern at landfills, where the mercury from crushed bulbs could escape and contribute to air and water pollution.

7. They release less mecury than the coal burned to fuel incandescents.

...and by the time you need to replace them, likely there will be LEDs just as efficient. We're that close.
