Merril Lynch Supports Gov. Goodhair's Coal Boondoggle, Gets Die-In At Boston Offices
Environmental activists yesterday staged a “die in” protest outside the Boston offices of Merrill Lynch, decrying the firm’s financial support of an $11 billion project to build 11 coal-fired power plants in Texas.

The protesters spit out chocolate fudge from their mouths to fake illnesses they say could result from pollution from the proposed plants, which environmentalists say will one day contribute to global warming.

Some protesters dressed in “biomass” outfits and pretended to treat injured people during the lunch-time demonstration outside One Financial Center. “It’s to keep the pressure up,” said organizer Joshua Russell.

The activists, from the Rainforest Action Network, tried to deliver a letter to the Merrill Lynch offices, but were barred from entering the office tower.

1. Small victory for the sane side, at least...

One day before hearings on TXU Corp. coal plant permits were scheduled to begin, a state judge instructed the hearing officers to ignore the governor's order to fast-track the permits.

...

Since he issued the order, the governor has received more than $100,000 in campaign contributions from interests associated with the 16 coal projects proposed by various power companies.

Environmental and community groups have complained that the fast-track order doesn't give them enough time to review TXU's proposal and make a case against it.

...

"But by the time we found out what they did, and how it was going to affect our community, there was very little time for us to even put our feet on the ground and walk, much less to run, at the pace of this scheduling," said Ms. Morgan, who lives near TXU's Big Brown coal plant in Freestone County, in east central Texas.
