O'Malley Commits MD to Reducing Greenhouse Gases (joins RGGI)
Earlier this week, the Governor signed Maryland onto the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a cooperative effort by 10 states in the Northeast to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The requirement to join the RGGI was part of the Healthy Air Act, passed by the legislature in 2006.

In addition, O'Malley signed an executive order creating a Climate Change Commission that will be made up of key state officials, a representative from the University of Maryland and up to six others appointed by the General Assembly.

"Currently, seven states that include Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont are participating in the RGGI effort. Legislation was signed in April, 2006, that requires Maryland to become a full participant in the process by June 30, 2007. In addition, the District of Columbia , Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, the Eastern Canadian Provinces, and New Brunswick are observers in the process."

No leadership from the White House on this, so the states are carrying the burden that Our Glorious Dysfunctional Leader will not.
