<snip>
I’m on an organic beekeeping email list of about 1,000 people, mostly Americans, and no one in the organic beekeeping world, including commercial beekeepers, is reporting colony collapse on this list.

1. The situation with bees should be taken
a lot more seriously, it is not a joke, it is for real, organic or not, If the bee population is down only 25%, that means crop production in the US will be down 25%, that is a fact,, end of story.

2. Absolutely! It should receive as much or more attention than Bush's War. nm

8. Don't be a smarty pants. It could have drastic effect on growing food. Pollen
is needed to cross pollenate. Didn't you learn that in school or are you too daft.

Furthermore, it could also have impact on other insects and cause a wider problem.

What did I say to deserve this response?

Personally, I don't call a person "daft" unless I have a good reason to.

13. I think xultar assumed you were being sarcastic.
As in, that you felt we should not be wasting our time worrying about the Mysterious Bee Disappearance, because it would distract ourselves from Ending The Iraqi War.

14. Oh . . . well, I'm not very good at sarcasm.
I generally try pretty hard to say what I mean and mean what I say. Things are less complicated that way.

Bush's Occupation of Iraq IS the issue I spend most of my time working on, but that doesn't blind me to how important this bee thing is. My Dad used to keep bees when I was a kid and I remember what amazing little creatures they are, not to mention the fact that it's obvious how much our food supply depends upon them.

10. Actually, it should. No bees, no pollination, no food. We're dead.
Our fat, fructose asses will need all that crack-sugar, because we'll all starve to death.

3. Do you move the bees around a lot?
Edited on Thu Apr-26-07 10:54 AM by The Backlash Cometh
I'm really surprised that these poor bees get transported everywhere. Jesus, moving is consider one of the top seven most stressful things for a human being to do. Why wouldn't it be for bees?

4. That's interesting.
I wonder if there's a common thread among the non-organic beekeepers--a pesticide or some other chemical that's been widely introduced into their hives.

5. They think they may be on to the cause of the problem
http://www.newsday.com/news/health/la-sci-bees26apr26,0,4152870.story?coll=ny-leadhealthnews-headlines

fungus that caused widespread loss of bee colonies in Europe and Asia may be playing a crucial role in the mysterious phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder that is wiping out bees across the United States, UC San Francisco researchers said Wednesday.

Researchers have been struggling for months to explain the disorder, and the new findings provide the first solid evidence pointing to a potential cause............

15. I will update if new info comes in...
An online friend in another forum has been in contact with the author of the original e-mail concerning organic beekeepers and small(normal sized) cell foundation.

16. It sounds rather anecdotal to me.
Who counts these things?

What are "organic" bees? Do they have little controllers that keep them away from flowers with pesticides?

Usually population dynamics of a species requires considerable field research. Thus the claim about feral bees also seems anecdotal.
