1. They are used to prevent brown- and black-outs
so it might be a good thing.

The power company will cut off your A/C for short periods during spikes in peak summer loads.

It should not be an inconvenience and will prevent *much bigger* power problems...

2. I've had one on mine for years.
Never had problems - except when I had an old undersized A/C that just couldn't keep up. But even with that it didn't get too far behind.

Do they give you a year-round discount on your power bill then, like Xcel Energy does?

3. I'm curious, how do they control them?
Seems like the Phoenix metro area would be a good place to have them. Probably more reliable than hoping customers are good citizens and turn up their thermostats.

5. Well it's good for the environment. Inconvenient for you, but it will
prevent the building of more power plants.

6. My family does it.
The utility gives us a credit during the summer months and in return, they can shut off our A/C for up to four hours at a time, then they need to turn it back on for at least four hours. They cannot turn it off for more than eight hours a day though.

We have an office in my basement though, so I'm never bothered when the A/C is shut off. I just hang out down there. ;-)
