Solar power is a growing industry in Korea. Businesses in various sectors including construction, chemicals, IT and heavy industry are starting to build solar power plants and develop related products and services.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, Energy and Industry, there were 261 solar power facilities under construction or being planned in Korea in March. If completed, the total power generation capacity would be 121 megawatts -- enough for 50,000 homes, given that 440 homes can be powered by one megawatt.

At the end of last year, 69 solar facilities generated 11 megawatts for 5,000 homes. More than 10 times more electricity will be generated when all the current solar projects are finished.

The ministry said, "We aim to supply electricity for 100,000 homes using solar power by 2010. Recently, more and more people are applying for permits for solar power businesses."
