Dutch Try To Grow Environment-Friendly Meat in Lab

UTRECHT, The Netherlands -- Dutch researchers are trying to grow pork meat in a laboratory with the goal of feeding millions without the need to raise and slaughter animals.

"We're trying to make meat without having to kill animals," Bernard Roelen, a veterinary science professor at Utrecht University, said in an interview.

Although it is in its early stages, the idea is to replace harvesting meat from livestock with a process that eliminates the need for animal feed, transport, land use and the methane expelled by animals, which all hurt the environment, he said.

"Keeping animals just to eat them is in fact not so good for the environment," said Roelen. "Animals need to grow, and animals produce many things that you do not eat."

that "cut with the side of your fork" texture that a lot of people prefer, all with no pain to a sentient animal.

What's not to love?

cloning and related sciences, we could develop replacement organs for people - grow them in labs and use them as needed. Why not meat? Clone and grow steaks and chops and ham and ribs and bacon - sounds like a great idea to me - as long as it was cost effective, there doesn't seem to be much of a down side...

Will human organs and flesh grown in such a way NOT be taboo to eat ?

the cloning and growing at different sites. I really can't see a negative to this, except for all of the people put out of work, but maybe this industry would offer a lot of jobs - maybe?

GMO's might be harmless, they might not be - long term studies need to be done, and that can't really happen without proper labeling.

although I find it funny that this is preferrable to just not eating it, or even cutting back on the addicition. But it's still an improvement environmentally and as far as animal rights go.

Should go nicely with some fava beans and a good Chianti...
