Merkel vows no 'lazy compromises' on climate at G8 summit

Sat Jun 2, 12:47 PM ET

BERLIN (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not accept
"lazy compromises" on climate change at next week's G8 summit
she is hosting, she said in an interview published on Saturday.

In an apparent swipe at the United States, Merkel told Der Spiegel
weekly that any future agreement on limiting the emission of
greenhouse gases must be made within a framework overseen by
the United Nations.

"It is clear to me: we must find a successor to the Kyoto Protocol,
in a process which will be led by the United Nations," Merkel said.

"As far as I am concerned, that is not negotiable."

Merkel said she would stick by her aim of persuading leaders from
the Group of Eight most industrialised countries to commit to
limiting global temperature rises to two degrees Celsius (3.6
degrees Fahrenheit) and achieving a 50-percent reduction in
carbon emissions compared with 1990 levels by 2050.

2. why is it rubbish?
Razzleberry,

Could you explain what you mean by calling Angela Merkel's position "meaningless rubbish?"

That's rather harsh language for someone who is, in my humble opinion, standing up forthrightly for targeted emissions reductions.

I have two hypotheses:

One is that you are a "global warming skeptic." If so, whyn'cha just come out and say that?

The other is that, for some reason you don't like Angela Merkel...perhaps you are in Germany and are loyal to the SPD and not the CDU/CSU.

3. Effective control measures.
The EU leads the world in climate control regulations and implementation measures such as carbon trading, yet none of these efforts have yet resulted in any measurable decrease in average global atmospheric temperature.

I suspect that Ms. Merkel is frustrated by previous efforts and is hoping that G8 will produce a plan that actually accomplishes tangible results.

5. EU carbon credits, 0.27 Euro / ton
go here for the price
http://www.climatecorp.com/pool.htm

so far, the EU carbon market is a flop.

business as usual.
I suppose thing could change in the future.
remember that current carbon-credits once sold
for 30 Euros.

4. A.M. is the leader of a Center-Right party ...
Edited on Sun Jun-03-07 09:19 AM by razzleberry
(correct me if I am wrong)

and is P.M. (oops, Chancelor) only because
Germany has developed an extra virulent
form of what I call 'Italy-Canada' disease.

with that said.
Gemany, and the entire EU, has done nothing.
the EU (writing this in June 07 , so some crystal ball
observations are needed) would appear to be planning
on using dubious 'carbon offsets' to meet its obligation
to the Kyoto treaty that begin in 2008.

everyone in Germany knows they won't do anything
associated with the Kyoto Treaty,
so it doesn't (politically) cost anything
to demand something from the US.
and it might get her party three more
next next time

a free throw, makes no (constituent) enemies.

edit typo
