U.S. demand for voluntary CO2 credits grows: investor

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Demand has grown in the United States
from companies looking to buy greenhouse gas credits, either to
look greener or ahead of potential emissions caps, said an
executive at carbon project developer Ecosecurities.

The company was focusing on new business in the United States
on growing signs there may be national emissions legislation, on
top of emissions caps planned by individual states such as
California, which is pushing some firms to curb pollution ahead of
time.

"It's still small -- 5 to 10 million tonnes demand in total -- but
that is up from nothing a few months ago," Marc Stuart, the firm's
director of new business, told Reuters on the sidelines of a carbon
conference in Singapore on Thursday.

Developers of U.S. carbon trade are confident Washington will set
up a national cap and trade market on greenhouse gases, after
President George W. Bush leaves office, if not by early 2009.
