Car Bomb Kills Top Russian Regional Official

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (Reuters) - A top administration official in Russia's turbulent Caucasus region near rebel Chechnya
was killed by a car bomb on Wednesday as he left home for work, police said.

Magomedsalikh Gusayev, who was regional minister for national policy, information and external relations in Dagestan, died in an
explosion caused by a bomb placed on the roof of his car, police said.

Gusayev's death was the latest act of violence in the mainly Muslim Caspian Sea region, home to dozens of different ethnic
groups, that has been plagued by kidnappings, bombings and shootings linked to the Chechen war.

"According to witnesses, two men put an explosive device on the roof of the car as it drove away from his home in Makhachkala,"
regional police chief Adilgere Makhomed Dagirov told reporters.
