Man vandalises Hiroshima memorial

A protester in Japan has been arrested after vandalising a memorial
which commemorates the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima 60
years ago.

The man, who gave himself up to police, chiselled out a reference to
Japan's "mistake" of waging war from the stone.

Takeo Shimazu, 27, told police he was a nationalist and asked why
Japan should make an apology on its own monument.

The inscription partially chiselled out by Mr Shimazu reads: "Let all
the souls here rest in peace as we will never repeat this mistake."

He should have asked some of the old ladies who visit that museum if they were happy to see their lives upended in a dash for imperial power that ultimately cost many millions of lives including many of their friends and families?

I did ask an old lady who was running a bar/fast food shop about her experiences both during and after the bomb. She was ashamed at how the military had lied to them and how their actions and folly ultimately lead to the bomb.

The atomic bombs are Japan's equivalent of the Holocaust. It defined a moment that should never happen again to anyone. To forget them is to forget the real costs of imperialism and war.
