A suspicious package discovered in a parking lot caused police to evacuate the area along the southbound I-35 frontage road just south of downtown Austin.

The Austin Police Department confirmed they evacuated the area between Woodland and Oltorf streets. Residents of a nearby apartment are being allowed back in, but they can only enter by the back entrance.

An APD spokesperson said the recovered substance is not harmful to humans, but does contain components of an explosive device.

On Wednesday afternoon the package forced the evacuation of several nearby buildings, including a women's clinic and an apartment complex.
