Airlines suspend Sri Lanka flights after Tigers air raid

Emirates Airlines and Hong Kong's flag carrier Cathay Pacific
have suspended flights to Sri Lanka following a rebel air strike
around the troubled island's capital.

However, the airline plans to operate a relief flight for any
stranded passengers.

Hong Kong's flag carrier Cathay Pacific has suspended flights
to Sri Lanka's international airport indefinitely, it said in
a statement.

Planes manned by Tamil Tiger rebels struck fuel depots around
Sri Lanka's capital early on Sunday, briefly plunging Colombo
into darkness.

Tamil Tigers' air raid sends cricket fans fleeing

Tracer bullets streaked over Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, as Tamil
Tiger rebels launched a daring air raid yesterday, blacking out the
entire city during the final of the Cricket World Cup.

Fans who had gathered before giant screens to watch their country
play Australia fled in panic at the sound of heavy gunfire overhead.

No one is believed to have been killed, but Sri Lanka's only
international airport closed for the second time in a week as light
aircraft from the rebels' rudimentary "air force" dropped four bombs,
starting a fire near a gas storage tank.
