EDWARDSVILLE: Substance in package leads bank to close

05/19/2007

At least 30 employees and customers were evacuated from an Edwardsville bank Friday afternoon after a suspicious substance was discovered inside a package that had been mailed to the bank, authorities said.

About 3 p.m., hazardous materials specialists responded to the Bank of Edwardsville, 330 West Vandalia Street, after an employee opened a suspicious package. The package was addressed to "bank manager," contained a bogus bank document and had a return address scrawled on the outside, said Edwardsville Fire Chief J. Brian Wilson.

No one was injured, and authorities determined the package contained no hazardous materials. Emergency workers left the bank about 7 p.m.
