Anti-crime lookalikes copy vigilante methods - SA
Crime-rattled Joburgers are turning to a vigilante group to keep themselves safe, even if what they're paying for may not be the real thing.

The organisation's striking name boards, Mapogo a Mathamaga, emblazoned with two tiger heads, are cropping up increasingly in suburban and city businesses and homes.

But, according to Jeff Walker, executive director of Mapogo, several security companies are trying to cash in on Mapogo's reputation.

The organisation claims a success rate of around 95 perecent, and has a growing clientele.

'Our methods are different from the police'

While Walker was hesitant to divulge exactly how big the organisation has grown, he said it currently had 11 branches and claimed a client base of more than 60 000.

Those who subscribe to Mapogo pay a registration fee and R150 a month for a household or between R200 and R500 a month for a business.

In exchange, the client receives a signboard for their property and stickers for their cars.

This is an amazing story!
