Portugal to help Angolan army

Luanda, Angola - Portugal will help Angola's army train troops in peacekeeping tasks so that the southwest African country, where a two-decade civil war ended last year, can take part in international missions.

Army chiefs from Angola and its former colonial ruler signed a military co-operation agreement late on Wednesday which broadened the scope of a previous accord.

Angola has one of the region's most powerful military forces, with an army of roughly 100 000 troops. The army defeated the Unita rebels last year when it tracked down and killed their leader Jonas Savimbi.

The protracted war devastated Angola's economy and transport infrastructure.
