1. A European friend of mine tells me mostly the churches are empty
in Europe. Not sure myself.

2. I have quite a few friends and relatives in Italy
And they always say that the power of the church has diminished a lot in the last 20-30 years. The Catholic church is seen as something of a laughingstock - if it wasn't for it's money, it wouldn't have any influence in politics at all.
I think that's probably true across western europe also.
The last time the pope went to france, he got rotten vegetables thrown at him.
Or so I heard.
