Namibia land grab threat

Windhoek - An announcement by the Namibia Farmworkers Union (Nafwu) that it would occupy unused tracts of land on 15 white-owned farms next week was described as being of "no assistance" to the government, press reports said on Wednesday.

Nafwu announced its plan on Tuesday in Windhoek saying the occupation was an effort to "assist" government in its land reform efforts.

Frans Sheehama, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Lands said the illegal occupation of farms was of "no assistance" to government. "Should the farmworkers tempt the law, the law will react accordingly," said Sheehama.

Minister of Lands Hifikepunye Pohamba told Wednesday's German Daily die Allgemeine Zeitung, that land reform was governed by law and that he saw no reason to deviate from the law.
