"not the way it was done in 1963 in America." (Kennedy Assassination)
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan (??) and People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong (???) tried to raise doubts in the public's mind about the integrity of the investigation into the March 19 shootings in Tainan by demanding that outside experts examine the evidence and monitor the investigation itself. They recommended the well-respected criminologist Henry Lee of the Connecticut State Police crime lab.

Lee dispatched three experts to visit the crime scene, review the evidence, interview witnesses and check out the Criminal Investigations Bureau and Tainan prosecutors' investigative efforts.

The team did all that and more, even obtaining permission to examine Chen's wound.

Their conclusion: Chen and Lu indeed appear to have been shot on March 19, and at the time that cameras and witnesses suggest they were shot. One of the experts, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Coroner Cyril Wecht -- who was highly critical of the controversial Warren Commission investigation of the 1963 assassination of former US president John Kennedy -- said: "Everything is completely consistent -- no discrepancies, nothing strange." He said that the president's wound "is completely consistent with a gunshot wound," and added that the investigation of the incident was being conducted in a "completely open way -- not the way it was done in 1963 in America."

1. Lee invites fourth forensics expert
CNA , SAN FRANCISCO
Thursday, Apr 08, 2004,Page 4

Chinese-American forensics expert Henry Lee (???) has invited another seasoned expert, Charles Illsley, to accompany him to Taipei to help look into the March 19 shooting of President Chen Shui-bian (???) and Vice President Annette Lu (???), sources said yesterday.

Illsley, with years of experience in criminal investigation, excels in fingerprinting and laser technology.

Lee will rely on alternative light source (ALS) technology -- a new method developed by Illsley to search for tiny amounts of chemicals or other substances that cannot be detected by the naked eye.

For example, ALS can detect blood stains even after they have been washed away or coated with paint.

2. A-bian's shooting? It was me - TT

By Mac William Bishop ???

Sunday, Apr 11, 2004,Page 8

I have a confession to make.

I shot the president.

Now, it is no easy task to hit a man-sized target moving at a speed of 30kph from a distance of greater than 10m.

I know, because I have done it many times. As a former sergeant in the US Marine Corps, I was required to maintain proficiency in -- and received training with -- a variety of weapons. I won't pretend to be a super-marksman, nor was I ever trained as a sniper or a hit man. But I do reckon myself a fair shot, and so did the US Marine Corps, which awarded me its highest marksmanship designation.

This, coupled with the highly-respected tradition (Lee Harvey Oswald fans will appreciate this) of using former Marines in presidential-assassination plots, was all it took to spur the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) into action.

So when they came to me a week before the election and asked me if I could wing President Chen Shui-bian (???) while he stood in the back of a Jeep moving 30kph from 10m with a handmade 8mm two-shot pistol using homemade ammunition, I replied, "Why the hell not? Any requests for where exactly you would like me to flesh-wound the target?"

But perhaps you don't believe me.

3. Annette Lu says that she was the assassin's target
"Taiwan is an independent country, whether other countries in the world admit it or not," she said, "and our efforts to seek democracy and peace will not surrender to any violence or military threat."

"The international community and some individual countries always adopt their own perspective to understand Taiwan, so I would like to provide the Taiwanese view to assist those foreign guests and countries in understanding Taiwan," Lu said.
