"Police are questioning three people in connection with a shooting that reportedly took place right across the street from a local elementary school moments before students were let out for the day.
The shooting happened at about 3 p.m. Tuesday on Simpson Avenue in North College Hill, WLWT Eyewitness News 5's Sheree Paolello reported. Josie E. Becker Elementary School is directly across the street from where the incident happened.
According to police, three men arranged a delivery to an abandoned house on Simpson, and when the deliveryman arrived, the trio assaulted him, Paolello reported. A witness said he heard the deliveryman scream for help, then heard a gunshot."

"An 11-year-old student at Annie Morgan Elementary School was arrested and suspended after he was accused of bringing an unloaded .380-caliber handgun to school.
Two students came to school Tuesday and told a teacher they saw the boy with the gun, according to a WJXT-TV report. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the boy's mother were called. When they went to talk to the boy, he ran but was caught. "

Gun laws change could mean hunters must wait

Federal background check mandatory in Indiana starting today

Hunters planning to purchase a new gun for deer season may want to get the store soon.

Beginning today, a difference between Indiana state gun laws and the federal Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act mean anyone purchasing a handgun or long gun in Indiana will be subject to an FBI background check, which can take anywhere from 3-30 days.

Deer hunting season for firearms begins Nov. 15 in Indiana.

Indiana will continue to conduct state background checks but will no longer use the National Instant Check System (NICS) to conduct federal background checks.

Police seek gun history in Gary murder-suicide

GARY, Ind. -- Police were trying to determine where a 20-year-old man got the gun he apparently used to shoot to death four family members and then kill himself.

Terry Dennie was not old enough to buy the gun, the Post-Tribune reported Tuesday. But the 9 mm semiautomatic handgun had not been reported stolen, police said.

Gary police have asked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for help in tracing the gun's history, said Detective Sgt. Thomas Branson.

Early Saturday morning, police said, Dennie shot to death his mother, a brother, a sister and a 2-year-old nephew and then took his own life. The victims ranged in age from 2 to 41.

Oak Harbor man goes to trial on gun charges

An Ottawa County man is to go on trial next week on federal weapons charges.

The trial of Francis Warin, 72, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, will begin Oct. 8 before Judge David Katz of U.S. District Court in Toledo. Warin was indicted in June on charges of illegal possession of firearms, mailing a firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, authorities said.

Warin was convicted in the 1970s of possessing an illegal weapon after building a 9 mm submachine gun and taking it to the federal courthouse in Toledo. He received three years’ probation and was ordered not to possess any firearms.

Police officer kills 4 colleagues in shooting spree

NIS, Serbia-Montenegro - A Serbian police officer went on a shooting spree Tuesday, killing four of his colleagues and seriously wounding three others, police said.

The officer opened fire with a submachine gun in the Nis headquarters of the Serbian Security Information Agency, where he worked, said Goran Barun, the city's deputy police chief.

He first selected his targets, warning others to move away, and then later shot at random, Barun said. He identified the killer as Vladimir Rovcanin, a Serb from Kosovo.

The four victims were all from Kosovo, including a superior officer and his secretary, police said.

"Robert Louis Meyer, 55, of Boise died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Ada County Coroner Erwin Sonnenberg.
Meyer broke into a home on the 2900 block of Holden Avenue about 9 a.m. Monday, police said.

"A Nampa man was in critical condition Tuesday in a Boise hospital after he was found Monday with a gunshot wound to the head.
Officers found Daniel Carreno, 27, with a gunshot wound to the head.
Police have not been able to interview Carreno and haven´t determined how he was shot, Vincent said. His family members told police that the shooting was accidental."

Pending any developments in the case, District Attorney Bill Kenerly said no charges will be filed against a man who shot and killed an acquaintance on Aug. 18.

Kenerly said evidence in the case indicates that Gary Shrewsbury, 45, of 240 Lamb Drive, shot Ralph Avins in self defense.

Shrewsbury shot Avins with a .357 Magnum after he said Avins, 33, of 855 Tanner Road, Richfield, approached him about 4 a.m. outside Shrewsbury's home.Avins was brandishing an axe handle-type stick and wearing a mask, according to reports.

Shrewsbury said he did not know the prowler was Avins until after he fired a shot. The round hit Avins in the stomach.

It's not clear what Avins was doing outside Shrewsbury's home. "The only person who really knows is him. Based on the clothes he was wearing and the items he had with him, it appeared it was a possible robbery attempt," Sheriff's Lt. John Sifford said.

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- A gun-wielding teen took an administrator hostage at a high school Wednesday, and both were wounded after officers confronted the youth, officials said.

Mario Rodriguez, 19, was in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds, Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Lou Fatur said.

The Rio Cazadero High School administrator, whom police would not identify, was hospitalized in good condition with a wound to the leg. Though police initially said the administrator was shot, either by police or the youth, Fatur said it was possible the administrator injured his leg in a struggle with Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was armed with a shotgun and handgun when he came onto the campus just before 9 a.m., Fatur said. He said it was unclear if Rodriguez was a student at the school.
