337 crime guns-one gun dealer
Another criminal enterprise in action...

"San Leandro's Trader Sports was named among the nation's 10 worst firearms dealers Wednesday by gun-control advocates blitzing Capitol Hill to urge the defeat of a bill that would immunize the gun industry from lawsuits.
They said federal data from 1989 through 1996 -- the most recent available -- shows Trader Sports sold 337 firearms later traced back by law enforcement. Of those, 181 had a "short time to crime," defined by the government as three years or less from purchase to trace. The firearms were involved in at least 27 homicides, 26 assaults and two robberies. "

Don't worry, though, the GOP and the NRA have ccome up with a way to end these outrages...they're going to keep the ATF from inspecting gun dealers at all...

"Tiahrt's eight-point amendment, which targets the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and was drafted with the NRA's help, would prohibit the use of federal funds for several bureau activities. It would prevent the bureau from requiring firearms dealers to conduct a physical inventory, from denying licenses to dealers whose sales fall below a certain level, and from demanding that certain dealers provide documentation for all used guns sold in a specific period."

2. What MrBenchley didn't quote...
He said firearms can be traced without any crime involved -- perhaps after being seized during a noncriminal domestic dispute, for example -- and in many cases, whoever bought the gun isn't the same person who had it when it was seized by law enforcement however many years later. Traces really only measure a dealer's longevity and volume, he said, and Trader Sports is among Northern California's largest dealers after 45 years in business. "The person who buys a gun out of a retail store has to go through a huge routine of paperwork -- it's probably the most regulated business in the world."

And now you know the "rest of the story".

The Dix family sued gun maker Beretta U.S.A. in Alameda County Superior Court, claiming the handgun that killed Kenzo was defective because it lacked safety measures that could have prevented the fatal accident. A jury ruled against them in 1998, but the judge and the state Court of Appeal have granted a new trial scheduled to start Sept. 26. Craig's bill would bar their lawsuit.

The gun already had safety measures to prevent the fatal accident. One is called a safety (duh) and has to be disengaged. The other is called a trigger. Keep your finger off the trigger (duh) and the gun won't fire.
