Campaign to close the newspaper loophole.
These newspapers have refused to place ads by sellers of guns in their newspapers. The newspaper loophole is the rule that private citizens can sell their guns without a background check. This opens the field for domestic abusers, criminals and mentally ill people.to acquire guns.

1. Now you're getting it
The thing has nothing to do with gun shows. Nothing at all.

You, like many of us on the anti-prohibition side, want private citizens to be able to use the Federal background check system when they sell a gun.

Why not stop calling us names and start working with us to make that happen?

4. This is just ANOTHER loophole.
There does REMAIN A GUNSHOW LOOPHOLE. THE NRA won't tell you that, of course.

5. The "newspaper loophole" and the "gun show loophole" are the same thing
Namely, private, occasional sales of merchandise are not subject to the same level of regulation that a business is subject to.

There is also the "yard sale loophole", the "kitchen-table loophole", the "behind McDonald's loophole", and the "side of a highway ditch loophole".

6. Sheesh - you still DON'T get it...there is NO "loophole". Either private sales are

legal, or they are not. In general, selling a gun IS NOT illegal. Selling a gun to a known felon is, as is buying a gun if you are a known felon. NO "loophole", just "the law". No ONE needs the NRA to tell them that - EXCEPT YOU!!

8. No, put up or shut up
Seriously, be adult here. If you think there's a legal difference between selling a gun at a gun show and selling it through a classified ad in the newspaper, explain what you think the difference is.

10. Zane, they are all the same.
Zanne, the "loopholes" you are describing are all the same thing.

Private sales of firearms and not subject to NICS. This is true whether it is at a gun show or a newspaper ad. They are not different loopholes - they are all a consequence of the same thing.

Basically you want private sales to require the permission of the government before proceeding. Why don't you just say so?

2. Before I sell a gun to an individual
I don't personally know, I ask to see his concealed carry permit. Not quite as good as an instant background check, but I do know he has been checked out in the recent past. If he has a permit, the chances of his being a bad guy are slim to none.

can also request to see your ID. Now that he knows you're into firearms, he will now also know where you live.

17. If an EE can speak here for a second...
... what you're addressing is basic crypto / trust calculus (a subject too few... far too few... people study).

The seller, ultimately, has the trust initiative and sets the parameters of information sharing. If you don't trust someone with your authenticated identity, you do not have to sell him a gun (and probably shouldn't).

18. If he asks for my ID...
the deal is off. I'm not really that eager to sell my weapons, so I don't take chances.

I also usually offer the buyer the chance to meet me at a gun range to be sure that he is satisfied with how the gun functions and that it fits his or her needs. If they do, it gives me a chance to discuss firearms with them and help to overcome any misconceptions they might of picked up from watching too many movies. It's also an opportunity to introduce a new shooter to the pleasurable hobby of shooting.

It's important to me that my weapons find a good home with a responsible individual when they leave my hands.
